James Holland, editor of Electricpig, the UK’s fastest growing technology news site, gives advice on what to expect from CES 2010.
Gadget heads will flock to CES in just two weeks’ time, hoping for a glimpse of next-gen treats from the big-name manufacturers. At the tail end of a recession, it’s fair to expect the likes of Sony, LG, Panasonic and Toshiba will wheel out a bunch of tasty tech, ready to set our credit cards aquiver throughout 2010. But it’s not all about the big brands.
CES is a treasure trove for tech hunters. Dive off the beaten track, and you’ll find the next big thing nestling away from the big-name stands. Last year, the first wireless electricity systems made their debut on the show floor, beaming power to gadgets without the clutter of cables.
Hands-free motion control made an early showing too, almost a year before Microsoft sent jaws to the floor with Project Natal for the Xbox 360.
This year, expect to see integration as the watchword of CES. TVs with Twitter built-in. Spotify popping up in surprising places, and camera phones acting as a gateway between the web and augmented reality.
And then there’s 3D technology. All the major TV manufacturers have shown off their screens already, but with the Blu-ray 3D format now finalised we’re primed for a slew of movies to watch on them.
Broadcasters are throwing their weight behind 3D too. Both Sky and Virgin Media have announced 3D channels. This year you’ll see CES bear tech to make 3D affordable, so it’s realistic in more ways than one throughout 2010.
